Alongside a more critical understanding of the role of APIs in creating data, reflecting on our own roles as researchers in making data and describing its limitations, we also need to cast a critical eye on the tools we use. In doing this, we need to move beyond discussions about their perceived ‘black box’ nature, although these remain important. We need to expand our research imaginations and start first and foremost with identifying the research questions we wish to ask.
